“My relationship with Joe Reitman's acting class began when he asked me to be a guest speaker in one of his classes. Several years later, I have gotten so much more out of Joe's classes than I ever put in. Whenever I finish the first draft of a pilot, I take it to Joe's acting class to hear it read aloud and my work always gets better. Curious, I sat in his director session workshop just to see how Joe communicates with actors. Just as I thought he would, he has a natural warmth in the manner in which he shares his training and experience. Because he's such a nuanced and brilliant actor, he's expert at helping actors find their own measure of grounded specificity. If you're an actor, take his classes. If you're a director, take his classes. If you're a writer, take his classes!”

“Joseph Reitman is a triple threat! Actor-Director-Teacher! I had the extreme pleasure to participate as a guest in Joe’s class and it was an eye-opening experience. I have been invited into many classes during my career - very few reach the level that Joe is at with his students. He challenges them not on a group-think level but rather an individual-needs level. He understands as an actor himself each performance is specific to the actor and he works with them to maximize their skill set. He puts craft first. The end result is actor after actor rising above and beyond their limits. If you are thinking about taking a class - and are lucky enough to get accepted into Joe’s program - congrats - you are on your way to making a serious difference in your career!”

“They say, ‘those who can, do; and those who can’t, teach.’ Well, nothing can be further from the truth when talking about Joseph D. Reitman and his knowledge of the craft both in front of the camera and when teaching his classes. I have had the pleasure of knowing Joseph for over 20 yrs. and the honor of working with him on set as a filmmaker as well as the privilege of being a guest in his workshops. What I marveled at most when watching Joseph work with his students was how he pulled the absolute best out of each and every one of them. His approach didn’t re-write the book of character breakdown, it went back to the most essential basics in a fresh, left-of-left way that today’s actors can not only relate to but utilize. His direct, no-nonsense approach and knowledge of the craft is second to none and I too learned a great deal as a Director watching him work. Whenever actors ask me to suggest a coach or a workshop to sharpen their skills, without hesitation I send them to Joseph D. Reitman. “

“Joe Reitman is as gifted and intuitive at teaching as he is at acting. Having cast him in recurring roles in two of my TV shows, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing his craft and professionalism in bringing characters to life. As a guest on his “Directors Session Workshop,” I’ve marveled at his skill in helping other actors learn to lift the magic off the page. I cannot recommend Joe highly enough.”

“I workshopped a script with Joe and his students and found the experience fantastic. Joe's students were not only very talented, but very professional. They took notes, made adjustments and performed brilliantly. It helped shape my script and give me ideas that i wouldn't have had otherwise.

It is abundantly clear that under Joe's direction and tutelage, his students will be ahead of the pack.”

“My agent referred me to Joe when I first arrived in LA. I hadn't worked much yet, and was really struggling to find my voice as an actor. I had tried several of the "big" schools for a while, but none gave me the personalized training or feedback that I needed; in fact, several schools left me with more scars than insights.

Enter Joe. Right away, I could tell I would blossom under his guidance: he is passionate, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about the work, but more importantly, he is sensitive, patient, kind, and compassionate. He's also a force of nature, a whirlwind of acting advice, delicious character ideas, and deep insights from his own personal experiences, as a working actor himself. EVERY lesson I've had with him has been so much fun.

I'm even more proud to say that after two years with Joe, I went on to book several shows, including leading roles in award-winning features like A SHOT THROUGH THE WALL, and MIDWAY. Despite my success, I still come to him yearly; not simply to brush up my technique, but as if to check in with an old friend, over a common love for acting.”

Actor: A Shot Through The Wall, Yakuza Princess, NCSI: Los Angeles, NCIS, & Dragon Ball 2

  • Victoria Raemy: Model & Actor

“I first met Joe when my agency asked me if I was interested in taking acting classes. I was a young model exploring the world of commercials, and I thought at least I could learn how to audition well. I ended up learning career changing tools and skills that I still use today. Joe’s coaching style challenges you to think of your skillset as infinite: you can learn anything and work to be better at it. Your natural talent, and specific loves, become your mastery. As I worked through the class, some of the most practical skills I learned were: how to audition well, how to read and breakdown a script, develop a character, remember lines, and improv/ad lib. Because of Joe’s class and coaching, I’ve had the opportunity to audition & callback for TV and films way beyond what I’ve ever dreamed, I am a more dynamic model, and commercials are consistently a significant portion of my career. I couldn’t recommend him more highly.”

  • Gavin Houston: Actor

“From my very first class, Joe’s knowledge and passion for the work and his ability to pull the best work out of his actors was clear. Not only does he have an amazing eye for detail in the script analysis, but also an incredible ability to tailor his knowledge and experience to the actor’s strengths. Being an actor, he knows how to communicate and explain notes clearly, and being a director, he gives you a clear vision of what is needed in each scene and what the director is looking for. You honestly get the best of both worlds with him. Not only have I booked and gotten amazing feedback from my auditions, but I’ve also become more empowered in owning the room or Self tape through creative, bold, story appropriate choices. I’m more excited about the work casting directors are going to see, then booking the job!! I have fun in my auditions and it’s resulted in more bookings. In fact I was recently offered a recurring Guest Star based off an audition I did months ago that Joe coached me for. And its all because he’s helped strengthen my work and my choices, as well as point out my bad habits. Once you work with Joe, you’re not going to want to go anywhere else. I highly recommend working with him.”

“I’ve known Joe for over fifteen years and was more than happy to lend two of my screenplays to be worked on and performed by students in his acting class. I must say, the experience overall of watching this was a fantastic one. Sure, I expected to hear my words brought to life - which is (almost) always a thrill for me - but what I didn’t expect was just how good Joe would be in helping his pupils push their performances to the next level. Joe has a real knack for dissecting and finding just the right adjustments to make those reads pop. I would definitely recommend his class to any of my thespian friends looking to up their game.”

  • Matt Sohn: Television Director

“I recently had the opportunity to sit in as a guest for a “director session workshop” that Joe put on for one of his acting classes. It was a great way to work with Joe’s students and see the improvements that they make as we broke down scenes and ran through them multiple times.

Joe is a wonderful and nurturing teacher who pushes his students to get out of their comfort zone and find their true potential.”

Television Director: The Office, Parks & Recreation, Superstore, Black-ish, The Mick, Florida Girls, American Auto, & Home Economics

  • Shannon Elizabeth: Actor

“Joe is by far the best coach I’ve ever worked with. Being in the industry himself, he knows how to talk to actors & get them to make their own, unique choices so that multiple people fighting for the same role will always have completely original performances. He is also someone who can make anything funny. So if you have awful comedy sides, Joe’s your guy to help you turn them into gold!”

Actor: American Pie, American Pie 2, Scary Movie, That 70’s Show, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, & Love Actually

  • Maury Sterling: Actor

“Joseph Reitman is a truly excellent coach. He offers insight from years of experience as a professional actor, director, manager, and producer. His coaching not only helps the actor in terms of character, story, and performance, but he has an acute sense of how the business works and how to be "smart" in a room. I recommend him to anyone, whether you are just starting out or someone who has been at it for awhile, and anyone in between. Joe is supportive, understands the experience from within, and will help bring out your best.

I was not paid for this review.“

  • Kelly Perine: Actor, Writer, Director, Producer

“I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Reitman back in college, so my knowledge of his fearlessness and my recognition that Joe is uniquely gifted goes back to when we were teenagers. And over the years I've seen that same fearless lack of ego come into Joe's acting and Joe’s teaching of actors. I say lack of ego because an actor's job is to get out of their own way and service the character. And the fearful actor never really makes strong choices for fear of being judged. But in Joe's work, both in his own performing and in the teaching of his technique, Joe will get you out of the way and out of your head so that what comes through are strong character choices and not weak actor insecurities. To be able to both do that, and teach that, is rare and unique. I would recommend Joe Reitman to any artist in any field who is ready to take their craft to a deeper level. “

“Working with Joe was best decision I have ever made for my career. Joe helps me bring something special to each audition and thanks to him I always get great feedback, call backs and have booked many roles thanks to the work we put in together. Joe has made me a better actor, a braver performer and taught me to enjoy myself in the audition room. I would not be where I am today in my career without him. If you are considering a coach for auditions or for an upcoming role, Joe is the man for you. I have worked with other coaches previously and none compare to the insight, skill and expertise that Joe has.”

  • David Delouise: Actor

“Joseph Reitman is hands-down the best acting teacher I’ve ever worked with. He has a gift. Joe is very skilled at communicating with actors. Joe’s ability to break down material and work on scenes with actors is extraordinary. He is an extremely talented teacher, actor, and director. He has a mind that conceptualizes, a clear method and vocabulary that leads others to bring their ideas to light.

He possesses an amazing amount qualities regarding teaching. I cannot say enough good things about him.

I highly recommend Joe’s class to everyone. If you’re lucky enough to participate in his class you will be a much better actor and a better person for it.“

  • Michael Taber: Assistant Agent at CAA

“I first started working with Joe when I was freshly new to California at 16 years old with virtually zero idea of what the entertainment industry was or how it worked. I was wide-eyed and just excited to be auditioning. Being as green as I was, we obviously had our work cut out for us as I found my voice creatively, but with his guidance and teaching he helped me land 44 episodes on TV and I was the best I ever was thanks to him.

What makes Joe so special as a teacher is that he is far beyond just a teacher.. obviously an accomplished actor (one of the best I’ve personally seen), he used his experiences with me to give attention to each part of my craft that needed it. But beyond that, Joe was my mentor and just as invested in my success as I was. He was my therapist, my pseudo professor, and most importantly my friend. Working with Joe is far beyond just working with any acting coach. There are thousands of programs and classes one could look into (and to be fair, many are great). But when you work with Joe, you are entering a pact that is guarantying a full service mentor to give everything he has to help you grow in your art and as a person. And that’s about as rare as they come.

I now work at CAA in our talent division, and work with a variety of artists with a myriad of training backgrounds. But I can very confidently proclaim that Joe’s training far exceeds what any of our top artists have gotten our could get anywhere else for all of the reasons I have listed above. And more importantly, everything that he taught me about the business is the foundation of what I use at work every day.

There is no one in this business with a greater commitment to his student’s success than Joe. And I would bet my career on it.”

“I moved to Hollywood at the ripe old age of 18 to pursue my dream of making movies and becoming a household name actor. The only problem with that...I knew nothing about acting.

See, while my passion was movies, I was an athlete by nature who grew up playing football under those Friday Night Lights in Texas. Sports was what I was trained and bred to do. So naturally I thought acting would be easy. I was wrong and I’m man enough to admit it. It was extremely hard, I didn’t know how to connect emotionally, I didn’t know what an objective was. Hell I didn’t know who I was. So after taking class from literally 9 different coaches and still not getting it, I was almost ready to throw in the towel. Then a miracle happened. I was referred to Joe by an attorney. I showed up to his house and I thought I was being punked. This guy looks like he’s the back up drummer for Motley Crew. Where’s his black turtle neck and fake glasses? That’s the thing with Joe...there’s nothing fake about him, no lies, no bs. He’s a straight shooter with a gift to see straight through outsiders to Hollywood like I was.

Within five minutes of me telling him my sob story and my “failures” in acting, he knew exactly how and what I needed. So, he said nothing, he went to his back room with his 12 dogs and grabbed 2 baseball mitts. This is not a joke. This happened. I thought to myself, “Yeah I said I was an athlete I’m not here to play catch.” He said as only Joe could, “Shut up kid, trust me.” We threw the ball for 30 minutes out front while we ran the scene. He’d say a line and fire the ball at my head, so I’d get pissed and say a line and fire it back at his head...and it all just started to click in. Based on who I was and what I wanted in the scene was how I would throw or catch the ball. I learned how to break down a character playing catch because it worked for who I was. Those 30 minutes changed my life and career forever. And to this day, any set I work on whether I’m acting, writing or producing, I bring 2 mitts with me for the outsider, the newcomer who was just like me. Thanks Joe!!”

“Joe Reitman has been such a gift to my artistic process. He has taught me to find deeper meaning through his astute process of script analysis. Most importantly, he has stretched my abilities as an actor and taught me to trust my instincts—that it can all be easy. He’s fun to work with I’m most certainly a better actor for it.”

“I first audited Joes class in person around 2019 and couldn’t get it out of my mind. In 2020 I joined his class over Zoom every week for about 2 years. Joe taught me certain skills about how to break down a script what the writing calls for the tone the difference between comedy and drama practically- in a way that was easy to grasp and work with etc. I learned a ton about how to take direction and mold myself to fit a directors perspective/ vision. It was fantastic practice and helped me immensely. Joe also brought in a different guest every month so I got to get perspective in real time with just enough pressure to make it both low stakes and feel like an audition.”
